Introducción: el SARS-CoV-2 fue aislado recientemente de células epiteliales de la vía aérea humana (enero de 2020). Este virus ha causado una pandemia que  desafía la infraestructura de la salud pública mundial.
Objetivo:
revisar la bibliografía disponible sobre el COVID-19.
Métodos:
se realizó una búsqueda sistemática de publicaciones en las bases de datos Medline y PubMed; se utilizaron las siguientes palabras claves: COVID-19, COVID-2019, 2019-nCoV, SARS-CoV-2, 2019nCoV, Wuhan, y coronavirus.
Conclusiones:
se seleccionaron 42 publicaciones que fueron trascendentes para entender las características patogénicas del COVID-19 en el contexto de la pandemia decretada por la Organización Mundial de la Salud.
